Edward & Sons Trading Company was founded in New Jersey in 1978 by Joel Dee. Dee was a vegetarian and traveling salesman for the family candy business founded by his father Edward, and the difficulty of finding convenient vegetarian options while traveling stateside inspired him to start the company.
While on a sales trip to Belgium in 1976, Dee tried miso powder for the first time, and found it to be a nourishing and satisfactory meal while traveling. When he returned to the states, he wanted to replenish his miso supply to enjoy at home, but discovered it wasnโt available in health food stores, and that the miso he found in Asian markets contained fish.
Dee didnโt give up. He wanted to share this convenient and flavorful seasoning with other travelers and cooks. On a sales trip to Japan in 1977, he met with miso producers and began development of a vegetarian instant miso soup. After a year of development, the first product arrived in New Jersey, and Dee resigned from the family candy business to focus solely on the new business, which he named Edward & Sons Trading Company after his father and brothers.
In 1979 Dee traveled the country selling Miso-Cupยฎ out of the Airstream trailer attached to his Chevy. He developed a sales and distribution network and began developing more products. In 1980 he could no longer run the business from the small location in New Jersey and moved the business to Saluda, North Carolina.
Dee continued to develop more products throughout the 80s, and moved again, in 1988, to Carpinteria, California, where Edward & Sons resides today.
